Redhawks Close Out Record Winning Season With Loss in ECAC Semifinal

PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche Baseball (29-15) fell to Waynesburg University (21-18) 5-4 in an ECAC Tournament Semifinal Matchup on Wednesday afternoon.

Waynesburg scored four unearned runs in the top of the first inning before La Roche got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. A pair of walks to Sean Lubin and Tyler Craig set the table for Brian Tougher, who lined an RBI single into left field to make it a 4-1 game after one inning of play.

La Roche starter Tyler Ferguson settled down in the second inning and allowed just 3 baserunners in the next five innings to give the Redhawks a chance. La Roche stranded runners in the third and fourth innings but answered with two runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to just one run.

Craig and Tougher both walked to lead off the sixth and Anthony Girdano reached on an error to short to score Craig. Fiekles followed with an RBI ground out to second to get within one.

Waynesburg scored in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead before Girdano lined a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 5-4 game. However, Waynesburg relief pitcher Brian Resnick threw a perfect ninth inning to preserve the one run win.

Tougher went 2 for 3 with an RBI single and a run scored and Craig reached base three times and scored all three times. Girdano provided a hit and 2 RBI and Lubin got on base twice and stole a base.

Starting pitcher Tyler Ferguson tossed six innings and allowed 4 runs but no earned runs on 3 hits while striking out 6 batters. Ian Kelly gave up an unearned run in an inning of work and James Connelly and Jesse Bauer each threw an inning of scoreless relief.
