Men's Basketball Shoots 86% From Behind the Arc to Beat Medaille 70-59
PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche men's basketball (11-3, 6-1) outscored Medaille College (12-2, 6-1) by 18 points in the second half to beat the visiting Mavericks 70-59 and gain a share of first place in the AMCC Conference standings.
The Redhawks trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and 7 points at halftime. Junior center, Joel McIntosh, helped keep La Roche in the game with 15 first half points including three 3-pointers.
La Roche got back into the game by controlling the glass and draining threes. The Redhawks out-rebounded Medaille by eight in the second half and went 6 for 6 from behind the arc.
La Roche trailed by three points with 2:52 left in regulation but senior guard, Mike Dixon, drained a 3-pointer to tie it at 59-59. Dixon tallied another 3-pointer after a missed shot by Medaille and Andre Flanigan converted a layup on the following possession to put the Redhawks up five points. Mike Dixon hit four foul shots to put the game away and McIntosh brought down the crowd with a fastbreak dunk with seconds remaining.
Dixon had his best offensive performance of the season with 25 points, 20 of which came in the second half. McIntosh recorded his second consecutive double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds) and went 4 for 4 from behind the arc. David Jackson grabbed double digit rebounds for the sixth straight game (11 rebounds) and Dixon added a game-high 6 assists.
The Redhawks shot a season-high 86% (12 for 14) from three point range and out-rebounded Medaille 37-27.
La Roche men's basketball returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Pitt-Bradford. Tip-off is set for 2:00PM.
