PITTSBURGH, PA – Derek Barber-Richards hit a layup with ten seconds left in overtime to give La Roche men's basketball (15-5, 10-3) a 59-58 win over Penn State Behrend (9-10, 8-5) and their first-ever regular season sweep of the Lions.
La Roche trailed 30-22 with less than five minutes left in the first half before going on a 7-0 run. Barber-Richards kept the Redhawks in the game with 15 first half points on 6 of 7 shooting.
The Redhawks shot a season-low 26% from the field in the second half but got to the free throw line seventeen times to keep the game close. Trailing 50-45 with 1:51 left, La Roche reeled off five consecutive points including a clutch foul shot by Andre Flanigan to force overtime.
La Roche trailed again in overtime 58-55 but Flanigan and Barber-Richards hit consecutive layups to take a one point lead. Penn State Behrend had one last chance but Oneal Brown intercepted a short pass as time expired.
Barber-Richards paced the Redhawks with 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting and Mike Dixon added 11 points and 5 rebounds. Flanigan reached double figures (10 points) for the third time in four games and David Jackson and Daron Tabron scored 8 points and 7 points respectively. Jackson led La Roche with 7 rebounds, all of which came in the second half or overtime.
Russ Conley led the visiting Lions with 18 points including his 1000th career point.
La Roche outrebounded the Lions 29-23 including 16-4 on the offensive glass. The Redhawks outscored Penn State Behrend in the paint (34-24), off turnovers (25-11), on second chance points (14-6) and on the fast break (8-4).
La Roche will host Penn State Altoona on Wednesday, February 1st. Tip-off is at 6:00PM.
