ITHACA, NY – La Roche men's basketball (5-4) dropped a non-conference game to defending Empire 8 Champion Ithaca College (5-3) 64-53 on Saturday. The Redhawks beat Ithaca 80-77 in a thriller last season.
La Roche trailed 34-22 after the first 20 minutes but used 9-0 and 6-0 runs in the second half to cut the deficit to just 4 points. Lionel Perkins led the surge with 14 points and 4 three-pointers and David Jackson grabbed 5 offensive rebounds to keep possession after possession alive. The Redhawks trailed by just 5 points after Jackson put back an offensive rebound with 1:45 left to play, but the Bombers made 4 free throws down the stretch to end it.
Perkins led La Roche with a career-high 19 points. He went 5 for 8 from behind the arc including 4 big three-pointers late in the second half. Jackson finished one rebound shy of his third double-double with 12 points and 9 boards. Derek Barber-Richards finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds and Joel McIntosh grabbed 8 boards.
Despite the loss, La Roche outrebounded the Bombers and by a wide margin on the offensive glass. The Redhawks held Ithaca to just 22 field goals and 24% from three-point range but the Bombers went 16 for 21 from the free throw line while La Roche went just 5 for 7.
La Roche men's basketball will look to rebound when they travel to Westminster College for an AMCC vs. PAC matchup on Monday. The Redhawks have not faced Westminster since the 2006-2007 season.
