DOVER, DE – La Roche men's lacrosse (0-1) fell to Wesley College (2-0) 21-13 in a high-scoring season-opener on Saturday.
The Redhawks trailed 5-0 until Dustin Reykdal and Bryce Wells found the back of the net to cut the deficit to three. La Roche and the host Wolverines traded goals before the Redhawks snuck 5 of the next 6 behind the Wesley goalie to make it a 14-10 game.
Wesley responded with three goals of their own, but La Roche again answered by burying three consecutive all on the man advantage. However, the Wolverines were too tough down the stretch and hung on for the win.
Reykdal led La Roche with 12 shots and 6 points on 4 goals and 2 assists and Crawford Healey added 5 points on 4 goals and an assist. Jean-Guillaume Thouin netted a hat trick and an assist and Wells and Blaine Schaffner had a goal each.
Nate Marsh and Braden Sparks led the Redhawks on defense with 6 ground balls apiece and Reykdal, Healey, and Mike Merchant scooped up 4 ground balls each. Mike Merchant won 50% of his faceoffs (13 of 26) and goalie Eugene LaBorde made 24 stops in the loss.
The Redhawks went a solid 4 for 6 with a man-up and attempted 39 shots including 25 that reached net, but Coach Doyle highlighted the 24 turnovers and 9 penalties as a place where the Redhawks can improve.
"I thought the game went well for being on the field for the first time this year, but penalties and turnovers are something we will need to limit going into our next game against Frostburg State."
La Roche will travel to Frostburg State on Wednesday, February 27 for a 7:00PM faceoff. This is the first meeting between the two teams.
