PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche Lacrosse (1-6) nearly overcame a large deficit but their furious comeback fell short as Lebanon Valley (5-2) upended the Redhawks 17-11 in the first game of their three-game home stand.
Dustin Reykdal buried a pass from Jean Thouin to give La Roche a 1-0 lead just 12 seconds in, but the visiting Dutchmen answered a minute later with a goal of their own to take control of the game. Dom Deltando netted his second goal of the season late in the first quarter and Reykdal scored with a man up to cut the deficit to 4 goals. Lebanon Valley followed with 7 straight goals before Mike DiMarco scored the Redhawks lone goal of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to La Roche as they fought their way back into the contest. The Redhawks outscored Lebanon Valley 7-1 in the final frame, outshot them 16-7, and won 8 of 9 faceoffs. Garrett Fraser sparked the rally with a goal, and Reykdal and Steve Murphy followed with a goal each. Bryce Wells scored 3 consecutive goals in less than 2 minutes and Deltando added his second of the game to cut the deficit to just five. However, Lebanon Valley's Scott Sutton answered with a goal to end the threat.
Reykdal and Wells each netted hat tricks in the loss. Reykdal finished with 2 assists to raise his total to 15 on the season and Thouin had a season-high 3 assists. Deltando registered 2 goals and his first-career assist and TJ Kretzler added his first assist of the season. DiMarco, Fraser, and Murphy all scored for the Redhawks.
Nathaniel Marsh had a terrific game and led La Roche with a career-high 6 caused turnovers. Thouin matched a career-high with 16 ground balls and went 20-10 in the faceoff circle. Goalkeeper Eugene LaBorde made 12 saves and picked up 5 ground balls and Wells, Deltando, and Crawford Healey added 4 ground balls each.
Despite the loss, the Redhawks outshot Lebanon Valley 45-41 including 29-14 in the second half. They also won the faceoff battle (20-12) finished with the same amount of turnovers (19), and finished with just one fewer ground ball (49-48).
La Roche will play the second game of their home stand on Wednesday against Houghton College. The Highlanders are in their first season of collegiate play and are coming off an 18-0 loss to Cazenovia.
