EGELSKY STRIKES OUT 13 IN DOUBLE HEADER SPLIT
La Roche College Softball (13-12) split a double header with Case Western Reserve University 4-3, 7-3 in a non-conference game at Redhawks Field.
The Lady Redhawks scored in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead in Game 1. DP Alyson Eckert led off the inning with a double and scored on the next at bat when second baseman Autum Hubert singled to left field.
Case Western answered in the third inning with two runs but La Roche added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Third baseman Jennifer Hawkins reached when Spartans's second baseman Mary Kruszka overthrew the first baseman and scored on a triple by first baseman Kayla Strittmatter. Eckert followed with a RBI double to score Strittmatter.
Case Western answered again in the fourth with a run to tie it at 3-3.
Tied in the bottom of the seventh, shortstop Jodi Walsh led off the inning with a single and then was bunted over by right fielder Chelsea Faynor. Walsh reached third base on a wild pitch and scored on the next play. Following a walk, left fielder Cara Giannandrea drew a throw from the catcher and Walsh took advantage stealing home for a 4-3 win.
Starting pitcher Kara Jo Egelsky threw seven strong innings allowing three runs (two earned runs) on eight hits while striking out thirteen.
The Spartans scored in the second inning of Game 2 to take a 1-0 lead but the Lady Redhawks tied it in the bottom of the third inning. Catcher Cara Giannandrea led off the third with a lead off walk and scored on a sacrifice hit by Strittmatter.
La Roche took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on an RBI triple by Walsh scoring center fielder Sydnie Martin.
Case Western got to Lady Redhawk's starting pitcher Jessicum Cullum in the sixth inning scoring four runs and two more in the seventh for a 7-2 lead. The Lady Redhawks loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning but could only manage one run.
Cullum pitched seven innings allowing seven runs (three earned runs) on seven hits.
La Roche will host Hilbert College on Saturday, April 24 at 1:00PM.
