ALTOONA, PA – Alex Spain hit a 3-run homer but La Roche Softball (4-13, 1-4) dropped the first game of a double-header to Penn State Altoona (12-5, 5-2) 12-7 on Wednesday in AMCC Conference action.
Penn State Altoona took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before the Lady Redhawks tied it with three runs of their own in the top of the third. Lea Kronz led off the inning with a single up the middle and Kim McLay followed with a base knock to left field. Two batters latter Spain cleared the bases with her first home run of the season to even the score up at 3-3.
The host Lions got two more runs in the bottom of the third inning but La Roche responded again when Kim McLay tagged a 2-out pitch to center field scoring Kronz and Sara Kohli.
La Roche put on a strong rally in the ninth when Kaylee Zozos roped a 2 RBI double but Penn State Altoona scored 7 runs over the final three innings to hold on.
McLay went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI, and a run and Spain singled to go along with her 3-run dinger. Kronz scored twice and Kohli, Alex Bauer, and Jennifer Lentz added one run each. Zozos produced 2 RBI in the loss.
The second game was suspended in the sixth inning due to rain with the score Penn State Altoona 7 La Roche 3.
