PITTSBURGH, PA -- Lady Redhawks' Softball (4-16, 1-7) dropped both games of a double-header to Medaille College (10-2, 6-4) 7-4, 3-2 on a cold and cloudy game on campus.
Medaille took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning in Game 1 before La Roche answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lea Kronz walked and Kim McLay and Kaylee Zozos followed with a pair of singles to load the bases. Kronz scored on the next at bat on an RBI groundout and Amber Steenebeke hit a 2-run single to left-centerfield to cut the deficit to one.
The visiting Mavericks scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning but La Roche got one back in the bottom of the sixth. Jodi Walsh led off the inning with a double to deep left field and scored two batters later on a Jennifer Lentz bunt single up the third base line, but Medaille held on for the 7-4 win.
Zozos finished with 3 hits and scored and Walsh and McLay registered 2 hits and a run. Steenbeke notched a 2-RBI single and Lentz went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Kronz scored a run and Spain added an RBI groundout in the loss.
Kaylee Girdwood got the start and gave up just 2 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking none. Ashley DeVito threw 3 scoreless innings of relief.
Mary Bongiovanni gave Medaille a 2-0 lead in Game 2 with a 2-run homer in the top of the first inning before La Roche came back in the bottom of the second.
Bauer, Katlyn Whitmore, and Sarah Kohli provided three consecutive 1-out singles to load the bases and Lea Kronz came through with an RBI infield single to cut the deficit to one run. The Lady Redhawks had a chance to add more but two straight flyouts ended the threat.
The Mavericks added another run in the top of the third inning on a double-steal but Amber Steenbeke and Jodi Walsh roped doubles to the left field wall in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 3-2 game. However, Medaille's pitcher Nicole Gulisano threw perfect sixth and seventh innings to win it.
Walsh went 2 for 3 with an RBI, double, and stolen base and Kronz added 2 hits and advanced a runner home. Steenbeke and Bauer scored runs for the Lady Redhawks and DeVito allowed just 1 run on 2 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
La Roche Softball will host Pitt-Greensburg on Monday in an AMCC Conference game. The Bobcats are coming of a double-header split with Pitt-Bradford.
