PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche Women's Softball (6-18, 3-9) broke out the bats to sweep Franciscan University 15-1, 8-0 in an AMCC Conference matchup on Tuesday.
The Lady Redhawks scored 4 runs in each of the first three innings and 3 runs in the fourth inning to cruise to a Game 1 win. The game was highlighted by two 2-run singles from Amber Steenbeke and an RBI triple by Alex Bauer.
Pitcher Ashley DeVito got the Game 1 start and allowed just 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 5 in 5 innings.
Steenbeke finished with 4 RBIs including two 2-RBI singles and scored twice and Lea Kronz went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs. Kim McLay reached base three times and rounded the bases all three times while Jennifer Lentz and Kaylee Zozos scored twice. Bauer and Alex Spain provided RBIs and Spain, Kaitlyn Whitmore, and Kendra Seaman scored runs.
The Lady Redhawks' bats stayed hot through Game 2 to win 8-0 in 5 innings.
Kronz gave La Roche a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff walk and run, and extended the lead in the second with an RBI single that scored Nicole Fievet.
Steenbeke hit a 2-out double in the third inning and scored on a Jodi Walsh RBI single to go up 3-0. La Roche then added 4 runs in the fourth inning and a run in the fifth to enact the 8-run rule.
Walsh went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and Kacey Haluska had an RBI double, walk, and scored twice. Kronz registered a walk, run, and RBI single and Lentz added an RBI. Zozos, Spain, Fievet, and Whitmore scored runs in the win.
Cyana Wulfers registered the win after throwing a terrific game. She pitched a shutout and allowed just 3 hits (4 baserunners) while striking out 8 batters.
La Roche Softball will host Thiel College on Thursday in an AMCC vs. PAC matchup. Thiel (8-16) is coming off a 6-3 loss to Westminster College on Monday.
