Women's Tennis Advances to AMCC Championship With Huge Upset Win

La Roche women's tennis (9-5, 6-2) upset previously undefeated and #1 seeded Franciscan University (11-3, 8-0) 5-4 to advance to the AMCC Championship and clinch their first-ever tournament medal.

The Lady Redhawks used two comebacks in doubles play to set the tone for the day. La Roche's #1 doubles pair (Victoria Shields/Alea Marks) overcame a 6-5 deficit to win 8-6, before #3 pair (Doria Shima/Melanie Ward) came back from down 6-2 to earn a huge point for the Lady Redhawks.

Shields followed her doubles win with a victory in straight sets against Franciscan's #1 singles player. Doria Shima cruised to a win in the #3 singles game before Melanie Ward sealed La Roche's berth in the AMCC Championship with a sweep in the #6 singles matchup.

The Lady Redhawks' win sets school records for most consecutive wins (7) and most wins in a season (9). La Roche also becomes the first team to knock off a #1 seed in AMCC postseason play.

The Lady Redhawks will meet seven time defending AMCC Champion Penn State Behrend in the tournament finals tomorrow at 9:00AM at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, PA. The winner will be crowned AMCC Champion and earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
