Raise the banner! La Roche women's tennis upset seven-time defending champion Penn State Behrend in dramatic fashion to win their first-ever AMCC Championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in May.
The Lady Redhawks trailed 4-1 before putting together a furious rally to take the match 5-4. Doria Shima led the charge with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win in #3 singles and Chelsey Wassel followed with a convincing 7-5, 6-3 win in the #5 singles game.
Melanie Ward won a tough three-set match in #6 singles 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to keep La Roche alive and to force a de facto championship match in #3 singles.
Senior captain Alea Marks answered to win the clinching match 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3 over Colleen Miller at the #3 singles position. Marks trailed in all three games but fought back to give the title to the Lady Redhawks.
In addition to singles play, Shima and Ward teamed to cruise in the #3 doubles spot 8-3 and Victoria Shields and Lynka Ineza had strong performances against two of the best players in the AMCC Conference.
The win breaks the La Roche women's tennis records for most wins in a season (10) and most consecutive wins (8) and gives La Roche College Athletics its fourth AMCC Championship in the past three years.
